The story of the movie in short is like that:

The story loes on Jamal Malik (Dev Patel) who is an 18 year-old orphan from the Mumbai small slums. Jamal Malik struggled a lot in his childhood and one day he participated in a contest show "Who Wants To Be A Millionaire?" where the prize is Rs. 1 crore (INR). The whole nation was watching the contest and he was just a single question away from winning a huge amount of 20 million INR (Indian Rupees) on India's show "Who Wants To Be A Millionaire?" Anil Kapoor was hosting the show and when he was going to ask the final question the time out for the day. But when the show breaks for the day, Mumbai police arrest Jamal Malik because they suspect that he has already got the answers before from somewhere and he is cheating in the show; the police were thinking that how could a slum street kid know so much answers and he is also not educated well? Then Jamal told all the stories of his life to the policemen. Each part of his life reveals the show's question. After hearing him, Mumbai police leave him and then he again participated the show next day with the host Anil Kapoor.
