Indian Independence Day 15th Aug

Jawaharlal Nehru said n Indian Independence Day, 1947 : "At the stroke of the midnight hour, when the world sleeps, India will awake to life and freedom. A moment comes, which comes but rarely in history, when we step out from the old to the new…India discovers herself again."

After more than two hundred years of British rule, India finally won freedom on 15th August, 1947. All the patriotic hearts rejoiced at seeing India becoming a sovereign country and the triumph of thousands of martyred souls. It was a re-birth of a new nation and a new beginning. The only fact that marred the happiness of the fruits by the blood of martyrs was the fact that the country was divided into India & Pakistan and the violent communal riots took away a number of lives. It was on the eve of 15th of August, 1947 that India tricolor flag was unfurled by Jawahar Lal Nehru, the first Prime Minister of India, on the ramparts the Red Fort, Delhi.

15th August is celebrated to commemorate the birth of the world's biggest democracy as a national holiday. Schools and people hoist the national flag through out the country and put them up on the rooftops and the buildings. People only go to offices to attend the flag hoisting ceremony. The Prime Minister of India addresses the whole Nation after the flag has been unfurled recounting the country's achievements of the year, discussing current major issues and future plans for the progress of the country. Recently, kite-flying has become a tradition on this day and people can be seen flying numerous kites of all colors, sizes and shapes symbolizing the freedom.

History of Independence

The struggle for Indian independence started with the colonialization of India by Europeans. They came to India as traders but over the period of time they rose to power took control of Indian affairs. British occupied most parts of India whereas Portuguese and French also had their influence on few places The first uprising which is noted in the history of independence of India took place in 1857. This first war of Indian independence, was termed as a mutiny by the British. Although not a success, this revolt sowed the seed for a new force, which was to take this struggle to its rightful end. As British oppression strengthened so did the urge to attain the freedom from it. This recommend got voice in form of many big leaders such as Mahatma Gandhiji, Netaji Subhash Chandra Bose, Sukhdev, Lala Lajpat Rai, Rajguru, Veer Bhagat Singh, Khudiram Bose, Jawaharlal Nehru, Ram Prasad Bismil, Vallabhbhai Patel and many more. These great leaders (patriotics) along with other many unnamed freedom fighters devorted their lives for the cause of the nation India. For them, Getting Independence from the British rule was the main aim of their lives. This dream of Indians was felt when finally India got freedom on August 15th, 1947. But the nation was distributed into two parts - India and Pakistan. Pakistan now celebrate August 14th as its independence day while August 15 was declared the Independence day for India.
